Screen-Free Toys

The screen is not competing fairly. It is built by people whose full-time job is keeping a child on it, and they are good at that job. What nobody hands you is an alternative that holds for more than ten minutes. Screen-free toys are the ones that win those ten minutes on their own merits, with no countdown, no reward chime and no next episode already loading in the background.

What holds turns out to be physical and open-ended. Magnetic cubes that snap into anything and are still standing the next morning. Jelly blocks that stack, collapse and get stacked again without anyone calling it a loss. Slow rising squishies for the child whose hands have to be occupied before they will sit at a table at all. These are no battery toys in the plain sense: no account, no app, no update, no password, and nothing that stops working when the wifi does.

This is not a set of screen rules and it is not a judgement on the ones you already have. It is about having something else within reach at the hard moments: the last hour before dinner, the waiting room, the long drive, the Sunday afternoon with nothing on.
