Description

He presses the word. The book says it, letter by letter, then the whole word, then the sentence it lives in.

C, a, t. Cat. A cat. A white cat. This is a white cat. That ladder is the whole idea: your child does not memorise a shape, he hears what each letter does, then hears those pieces snap together. When he meets those same letters in a word he has never seen, he can work it out on his own.

Inside are 17 leveled reading stories, the 26 letters with the sound each one makes, 40 sight words and 40 CVC words, over 200 common words and phrases, and 27 children's songs with 4 TPR songs. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so there are no button cells to buy or unscrew, and there is a volume dial on the edge for the car.

Nothing lights up, nothing connects, nothing asks for a password. He presses a picture, it answers, and he presses it again.

He Learns His Letters And First Words

He learns to read the way it actually sticks, and it happens faster than
you expect because he is doing it himself.

The book never spells a word at him. It breaks it. C, a, t, and then cat, and then a
cat, and then a white cat, and then the whole sentence. One mother put it plainly:
it teaches them how each letter sounds and then how to join those sounds, so when
they see those letters in another word, they remember the sound and can read almost
anything.

That is the difference between a child repeating a word after you and a child
reading one he has never met.
Thirty Quiet Minutes In The Car

Thirty Quiet Minutes In The Car

You get the back seat back, and he is not on a screen to do it.

Two mothers filming their own school runs called this the same thing, without
knowing each other: their secret weapon for keeping a kid quiet in the car. It is a
book, so it goes in a bag. It has a volume dial, so it does not take over the
front seat. And it holds him because he is doing something, not watching something.

It works the same way after school, when a screen is the easy answer and you would
rather it was not.
He Starts School Already Reading

He Starts School Already Reading

He turns up to his first year already knowing what letters do, which is
the part that decides whether reading feels easy or hard.

The stories are graded, 17 of them, so he is never on a page that is too far ahead.
Under those sit 40 sight words, 40 CVC words and more than 200 common words and
phrases, which is most of what he needs to read his first real book. Parents
homeschooling their three-year-olds keep saying the same sentence: he loves it, and
it is genuinely helping him read.

Age 3 and up, and it stays useful for years because the levels go up with him.

Questions before you buy

Does it sound the words out, or just say them?

It does both, in that order. Press the word and it gives you the letters first, then the whole word, then the word inside a sentence. C, a, t. Cat. A cat. A white cat. That is the part that lets a child read a word he has never seen before, instead of recognising one he has already been shown.

What age is it for?

Three and up. At three he presses pictures and repeats single words. At four and five he works through the letters and the sight words. The 17 stories are graded, so the book keeps up for a few years rather than being finished in a fortnight.

Does it need batteries?

No. It has a rechargeable battery inside and a USB cable comes with it, so there are no button cells to buy or unscrew. There is a volume dial on the edge of the book, which matters more than it sounds when it is being used in a car.

What is inside the book?

17 leveled reading stories, the 26 letters with the sound each one makes, 40 sight words and 40 CVC words, over 200 common words and phrases, 27 children's songs and 4 TPR songs. There is also an alphabet chart page that reads the whole alphabet aloud.

How long does delivery take?

We prepare orders within 24 to 48 hours, then delivery runs 8 to 15 days with tracking. Shipping is $9.95, free over $80.
