Eight squishies in a box, and the fight over who gets which one lasts about four minutes. Then everybody has one and the room goes quiet.

You know what is in it: a dumpling in its little bamboo steamer, a strawberry, an axolotl, two ice cubes with things floating inside, a glitter globe, a stick of butter and a highland cow. What you do not know is the colours. Those come out of the box random, which is the part they care about.

Each one is soft gel that gives slowly under a thumb and takes its time coming back. No batteries, nothing to charge, nothing that makes a sound across the room.

They end up in pockets, in the car door bin, in a school bag. That is where they are supposed to end up.

What age is it for?

We mark this one 6 and up, and that is our call. The maker's own box carries two markings that do not agree: a 14+ badge, and a choking hazard warning that says not for children under 3 years. We will not sell it under 3, and we are not going to pretend a squishy is a teenager's toy.

Do they stay squishy?

They are soft gel with a slow rebound: press one and the dent takes its time filling out. Wipe them with mild soapy water when they pick up pocket lint, keep them out of direct sun and away from sharp edges.

Can I pick the colours?

No, and that is on purpose. Every box holds the same eight shapes, and the colours are whatever comes out of the factory. Two boxes are rarely the same.
