Description

You hand over the ring of keys and the room goes quiet. Nine barns ride the train, each one numbered, each one locked, and each lock takes exactly one key off the ring. Find it, line it up, turn it, and there is a farm animal waiting on the other side. Hooked up nose to tail the train runs 29.5 inches across the rug, and every animal comes off it and onto a fingertip. It is a lock and key toy, a counting train and nine finger puppets in one box. Nothing plugs in, nothing charges, nothing beeps at six in the morning.

Finally, More Than Ten Minutes

Finally, More Than Ten Minutes

Most toys hold a three-year-old for four minutes. This one has nine barns, and each barn is a small problem that has to be solved before the next one opens. Your child sits down with the ring of keys and works along the train, and somewhere past the third barn they stop looking up. Fifteen minutes of real concentration, and it is not the kind that ends with a screen. When the last barn is open the animals go back in, the keys go back on the ring, and the whole thing starts over. That is why it does not end up at the bottom of the toy bin.
Colors, Numbers And Nine Small Wins

Colors, Numbers And Nine Small Wins

Every barn is numbered and every barn has its own color, so counting and matching happen without anyone calling it a lesson. The first time, your child tries every key on the ring. Somewhere around the fourth barn they stop guessing and start looking: this key is blue, that barn is blue. Getting it home still takes a pinch grip, a bit of aim and a turn of the wrist, which is exactly the movement a small hand is still working out. The first few take a while. Then one day they do not, and your child hands you the barn already open.
Nine Numbers And A Farm To Go With Them

Nine Numbers And A Farm To Go With Them

The barns are numbered 1 through 9 and each one is a different color, so counting the train and sorting the train end up being the same game. Inside there are nine animals and a farmer, and every one of them is hollow underneath and sits on a fingertip. That is where the train stops being a train. The sheep talks to the pig, the frog gets a ride, and you get a story told to you instead of read out loud.
