Too much choice is its own problem when you have ten minutes and a birthday on Saturday. This page is the short list: the handful of things worth looking at first if you walked in and asked. It is not everything in the catalog and it is not meant to be. It is the fastest route from opening the site to having something in the cart that a child will actually use.
What holds a place here comes down to three things. The toy has to work the moment it comes out of the box, with nothing to assemble and nothing to charge first. It has to suit a wide enough age band to stay a safe pick when you do not know the child well. And it has to still be in use a month later rather than at the bottom of the bin. Right now that is one thing to build with, one to stack and squash, one to squeeze and trade.
Treat this as a starting point rather than a ranking. If you already know what your kid is into, the Play and Build aisles will get you somewhere better in about the same time. If you are buying for someone else's child and working from an age and nothing else, start here, then check the age note on the product page before you buy. The list changes as the catalog grows, so it is worth a second look next month.
When in doubt, take the one that does more than one thing. It is the pick least likely to be wrong for a child you barely know, and the one most likely to survive the first week.
